Portugal - 10 2011 : In October/November of 2011, we visited the wonderful country of Portugal for the first time. We flew into Lisbon and rented an apartment, in the Sao Bento area, for 4 days. LISBON is Portugal’s capital city and sits on the banks of the Tagus estuary, 10 miles from the Atlantic. With a population of 500,000 Lisbon is a city of wonderfully diverse communities, steeped in history and culture. On our 5th day we rented a car and headed to the Lisbon Coast and up to the central coast (Silver Coast) with many stops along the way. We spent 3 nights in an apartment in a small town called Sao Martinho do Porto, using it as a base for exploration of the wonderful towns in central Portugal. We then drove to the wonderful town of PORTO – a truly magical port town who’s city center was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001 and has recently been rated as number 4 in the top 10 places to visit in 2011 by Lonely Planet. We stayed in our Porto apartment for 3 nights (not nearly enough time) and then headed back to Lisbon for our final night before flying out. Portugal is truly a beautiful county with amazingly friendly, polite and warm people – a place we have already said we will return to and revisit and explore even more.

Mexico City - 03 2011 : History and culture dominate Mexico's capital city, where you'll find the ruins of Aztec temples, the murals of Diego Rivera and the paintings of Frida Kahlo. Connecting the 21st century to the city's vibrant past, local dancers and drummers perform at the Zócalo, a public plaza surrounded by famous landmarks such as the Metropolitan Cathedral and Palacio Nacional. Chapultepec Park, with its popular anthropology museum, and the ancient canals of Xochimilco offer endless activities. Although much is written about how dangerous and dirty this city is, we found it just the opposite. The people were friendly, we felt amazingly safe (they even have tourist police to assure safety, the weather was wonderful and the skies clear, we even took the subway all over town and beyond. Overall a wonderful city we would visit again.

Croatia - 05 2010 : In May, 2010, we spent two weeks in lovely Croatia. Two weeks was only enough to scratch the surface....there is so much to see and so many wonderful islands to visit, let alone explore the inland area. Although the weather was not perfect and May is very early in the season and not all facilities were open or transportation available, it was lovely to be there without crowds. Highly recommend Croatia as a holiday destination.

NF, Berlin - 04 2010 : Germany, May, 2010 - to Nordfriesland and Berlin. Nordfriesland is a beautiful area at the very north tip of Germany near the North Sea. Holger is from this area and his parents still live there, in a quaint little village called Bredstedt. Miles of ocean front, bike paths, sheep, cows and lots of nature abound. Our friend Christian (from Munich) came to stay with us at Holger's parents house. After Bredstedt, we took a train to one of our favorite cities - Berlin. Had a wonderful apartment there in Kreuzberg -- and although the weather was 'less than cooperative' we still had a wonderful time walking the city, visiting museums, stopping at coffee shops and even once a Biergarten.

The remaining photos were taken on the Big Island - mostly on the Hilo side of the island where we visited our friends Rick and Riki. South America - 09 & 10, 2008 : We traveled first to Beunos Aires, Argentina and rented an apartment there for a week. From there we took an overnight bus (not like American buses - these were more like business class seats on an airline, to Mendoza for 3 nights. From Mendoza we took another bus ride over the Andes - with a 2 hour stop at customs at the Chilean boarder -- a hair raising ride down the Chile side of the Andes! We arrived in Santiago and proceeded, via numerous subway and bus trips, to Cajon de Maipo - a gorgeous area in the Andes Foothills at about 3,000 feet elevation, where we stayed another 3 nights. We returned to Santiago and stayed in the city for 4 nights, and then another bus to Valparaiso where we stayed 4 nights with one day trip to Vina del Mar.
